Mazda has made a surprising move with its 2025 CX-70, a mid-size SUV. Expected to fit between the smaller CX-50 and larger CX-90, it turns out to be the same size as the CX-90, minus the third row. This might be an option rather than a standalone model. Despite this, the CX-70 shares the clean design and attractive interior with soft leather and metallic trim seen in the CX-90.

Notable differences include a blacked-out grille, mirrors, door handles, and unique wheel design. For a touch of Mazda style, you can opt for the red Nappa leather, paying homage to the 100th Anniversary Special Edition MX-5. While larger than a Miata, Mazda emphasizes the family connection. Moving to the second row, you’ll find reclining seats and ample head- and legroom, along with a hidden underfloor storage box and spacious cargo area.

Under the hood, the CX-70 offers three powertrain options like the CX-90, featuring a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine with a 48-volt hybrid system, providing 280-hp and 340-hp ratings. Additionally, there’s a plug-in hybrid option using a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor for a combined 323 horsepower. All come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Inside, the CX-70 shares features with the CX-90, including a full-color digital dash and a 12.3-inch infotainment display. The controls include buttons and a rotary knob on the center console, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration. A new safety feature, “Unresponsive Driver Support,” brings the vehicle to a stop if the driver ignores warnings.
